Miltiades’s son Cimon was a major Athenian figure of the s and s BC. His daughter Elpinice is remembered for her confrontations with Pericles , as recorded by Plutarch. Tyrant of the Thracian Chersonese[ edit ] Illustration of Miltiades Around BC, Miltiades the Elder left Athens to establish a colony on the Thracian Chersonese now the Gallipoli Peninsula , setting himself up as a semi-autonomous tyrant under the protection of Athens.

Interactive media from the s to now Interactive media from the s to now Submitted by krm on Thu, 6: In July of , Vannevar Bush wrote an essay for the well-respected literary magazine, The Atlantic Monthly which inspired and resonated with innovators for decades after it was first published. Bush believed knowledge was coming in at such a great pace that no individual could absorb, much less remember very much of it.
He noted that although this ever-increasing degree of specialization was necessary for progress, it made any possible connections between disciplines superficial, at best. He believed that technology could help. The user of the Memex could instantly browse through an almost unlimited number of articles. This idea of links and trails provided the fundamental inspiration for the kind of hypertext linking used to navigate sites on the Internet a half century later. There has not been a more enabling piece of software supporting instructional media than Apple’s HyperCard.
It was the incarnation of Vannevar Bush’s Memex and a more practical, albeit less ambitious, embodiment of Ted Nelson’s Xanadu hypertext system— with a bit of Douglas Engelbart’s sense of inventive engineering thrown in for good measure. What is most important about HyperCard is that people used it. HyperCard enabled non-technical people to create original solutions that led the world to truly understand the value of the nonlinear, linked world that would come to represent the World Wide Web a decade later.
He described HyperCard, “Simply put, HyperCard is a software erector set that lets non-programmers put together interactive information We use cards that contain graphics and text and buttons The freedom to organize the information according to how things are associated with one another.
Volatile-Rich Planet Loading the player MESSENGER measurements have revealed that Mercury is surprisingly abundant in volatile elements that evaporate at moderately high temperatures, ruling out many of the models for its formation and early history that had been proposed before the mission. Because potassium is much more volatile than thorium, the ratio of the abundances of these two elements is a sensitive measure of thermal processes that fractionate elements by volatility.
For Mercury, as seen in the first graph, this ratio is similar to that for other terrestrial planets at greater distances from the Sun but significantly higher than that for the Moon, which lost potassium during the giant impact that led to its formation. Relatively high abundances of other volatile elements, including sulfur right side of the animation , sodium, and chlorine, provide further evidence that Mercury is volatile-rich.

Marian Feldman started with a presentation on the Open Educational Resource OER she created several years ago for her courses on ancient Mesopotamian art [see slides ]. She commented that Mesopotamian art may seem esoteric; not many people are readily familiar with the subject matter. The only text, The Art and Architecture of the Ancient Orient Frankfort was published in , and though new editions were released up until , the material was not updated.
The OER has other value as well. Feldman was also interested in highlighting these works of art in a time when many cultural heritage sites and objects in the region have been destroyed or are under threat. The OER as an open resource puts information in the public domain where it is easily accessible. The platform uses a Creative Commons license and content is freely accessible to all. Feldman and her graduate students created 15 modules over two years. Each module is stand alone, and many incorporate videos.
The modules can be downloaded as a PDF—which students found useful for study purposes—although multimedia content such as videos is not viewable in the PDF. She noted that because the platform is open, she cannot track use by individual students to be sure that they are viewing the modules. However, end-of-course surveys of the students indicated that they had found the OER modules to be valuable course content.
She received positive feedback from colleagues as well. The one complaint from students was that at times the platform was slow, particularly when playing multimedia clips and downloading materials.

Beta and omega[ edit ] Social animals in a hierarchic community are sometimes assigned ranks in ethology studies. Beta animals often act as second-in-command to the reigning alpha or alphas and will act as new alpha animals if an alpha dies or is otherwise no longer considered an alpha. In some species of birds, males pair up in twos when courting, the beta male aiding the alpha male. It has been found that the social context of the animals has a significant impact on courtship behavior and the overall reproductive success of that animal.
Omega animals are subordinate to all others in the community, and are expected by others in the group to remain submissive to everyone. Omega animals may also be used as communal scapegoats or outlets for frustration, or given the lowest priority when distributing food.

How do we know that everything in history books is based on fact? That is why history is always open to revision, and doing it requires a critical mind and the skills of a detective. I am a historian who loves mysteries, and this story is one of them. A Time of Scandal presents a new and expanded picture of a racy scandal about political corruption and bad behavior in the early s — a time when Prohibition had shut bars and spawned bootleggers, drugs were widely available at least in major cities, women could vote and wear short skirts but were still treated as second-class citizens, hostility toward immigrants was tinged with fear for the nation sound familiar?
The story that has come down in other history books goes as follows:
I got really invested in the aspects that centered on educating teens about dating and sexual violence and decided to continue that work after college. My first jobs post-grad were mostly doing crisis intervention for direct service agencies and domestic violence organizations that .
