Turn Salt-Away Mixing Unit to ‘rinse’ position to begin water flowing through the water jackets. Some engines are required to warm up first to open water jackets. If your engine has this requirement, wait until the thermostat opens the water jackets, then turn valve to the ‘Salt-Away’ position. This position mixes Salt-Away and water to the correct ratio of Salt-Away to water for easily removing salt. Run engine with Salt-Away flushing through the cooling system. Watch for the Salt-Away foaming action to exit the exhaust. Turn off engine after Salt-Away foaming action has appeared, about seconds, while Salt-Away is still present in the water jackets. It is ok to flush for up to 1 minute. Flushing for more than 1 minute is unnecessary, and the product is being wasted. Turn Salt-Away Mixing Unit valve to the ‘off’ position and remove Mixing Unit from the flushing muffs or other flushing device.

Spray fogging oil into the engine. Start the engine and spray fogging oil into all the carburetors. Just spray a little in each carb, and keep sraying in each carb with longer blasts, untill the smoke is rolling. A big blast in each carb should stall the engine for you, or shut it off with the key as soon as you stop the spraying.

In fact, pipes are rarely used at all on boats, replaced by easier-to-handle flexible hose or tubing. Here is an overview of a typical on-board water system.
Tanks Because water is heavy, tanks should be mounted low in the boat. Where space is available, it is a relatively simple matter to add extra tanks. Rigid polyethylene tanks are available in hundreds of shapes and sizes, or you might use a flexible bladder tank–essentially a water bag. Threaded hose barbs allow for hose connections. The inlet is connected to an on-deck fill. Be sure the deck-fill has an O-ring to seal out seawater when it is closed.

In both cases, reliability is far better than it was in decades past, fuel efficiency has increased, and problems like smoky exhaust and ear-splitting sound levels are ancient history. Posted on September 14, by Rhian We had such a nice trip back from the Corrotoman that we decided not to ruin our possibly last memory of charging along under full sail by going out in less than perfect weather or having to motor. It was also less emotional not to have known it might be the last sail at the time! As the Atlantic crossing was a downwind passage, the mainsail can be pressed against the mast spreaders and constant movement will wear the sailcloth, so we put up the protection, taped around the spreaders.
It stayed up well, hence the old glue took a bit of work to remove but we put up new lazyjacks at the same time. Both cabins look really nice now, all empty, huge and clean. The lockup is virtually full, despite it being 10 feet by 5 feet. We need to leave items on the boat that are included in the asking price and these range from the satellite phone to champagne glasses.

Many of us do padlock the trailer hitch lever down so it can not be disconnected from the ball. This can also be a good thing to get used to doing as it is a reminder to not forget to snap the lever down onto the ball. But what about securing the hitch extension into the bumper’s receiver? If you just use the original spring snap clip to hold the pin in place, it is rather easy to pull the pin, slide the trailer rearward enough to get the extension out of the receiver and then transfer the extension to a waiting vehicle that has the same commonly used receiver.
To prevent this, I have drilled my extension pin out enough to also accept a padlock bail, as shown in the photo below on the right. It is nice to purchase 2 or 3 padlocks using the same key for this situation.
Install the head unit vertically, above bilgewater, between the tank and engine (or primer bulb if on an outboard). The hoses should reach the engine and tank without kinking or making sharp turns. Drill pilot holes in the mounting point, inject sealant and fasten with self-tapping stainless steel screws.

By Lenny Rudow May 28, What kind of madman would intentionally pitch a perfectly good outboard engine over the side of his boat? Yep, that would be me. In fact, I had a completely reasonable motive for giving my trusty old four-horse Mariner the heave-ho into a briny bath: Because the single most important thing you need to remember about pickling an outboard is to begin this process immediately after removal from the water.

Despite the fact that this article discusses supplying gas to an engine, I will not discuss running out of gas…a problem best prevented by using the same principle airplane pilots do to assure their adequate fuel supply.
The lessons below have been learned the hard way, by having to row distances in the noon sun, against current and wind, despite having enough fuel onboard to keep a perfectly functioning outboard engine running. The problems described below are particularly troublesome because they often cause an engine to stall only after it has idled and run long enough to travel up to a quarter of a mile into open water.
At the beginning of each season, or whenever the hose is connected to its tank, make sure the arrow points in the direction fuel must flow…from tank to engine. Sounds too simple to mention, huh? It happened to me when someone I trusted set up my dinghy. In such a case the hose is clogged, or the check valve inside the bulb is faulty, or the hose is installed backwards. Look for the flow direction arrow each time you install a fuel tank hose. Unfortunately, if air has entered the line after sitting a while, the engine may start but will stall within a minute or two.
The only way to assure that the fuel hose has been properly primed with gas is to raise the bulb so the check valve arrow points up, then do the squeezing. No suction means a faulty check valve. A faulty check valve may be bypassed by utilizing the natural phenomenon referred to as a siphon.
