Rita Moreno was subsequently cast in the role. In September The New York Times reported that her death was caused by bone marrow particles from a fractured metatarsal bone in her right foot that entered her bloodstream and reached her brain and lungs. She was the first African-American woman to grace the cover of Life magazine. Suffered from near paralyzing stage fright whenever she had to perform.

Advanced Search Abstract The emergence and closure of the Isthmus of Panama had regional and global impacts that were rivalled by few other Cenozoic geological events. The closure of the Central American Seaway and the rise of the Isthmus had dramatic affects on climate and air and oceanic currents worldwide. Formation of the Isthmus also drove terrestrial biotic interchange, ending the isolation of South America by permitting the mixing of its biota with that of North and Central America.
A dated phylogenetic tree of a well-sampled clade of palms in the tribe Trachycarpeae Copernicia, Pritchardia and Washingtonia was used to conduct biogeographical analyses. Examination of the timing of lineage dispersal from North into South America was performed and two contrasting temporal hypotheses of the Isthmus formation were tested: Copernicia is inferred to have dispersed through the Isthmus of Panama region into South America and subsequently into the Caribbean, where it underwent a rapid radiation.
Consistent with a geologically older age for the Isthmus than previously understood, our results support recent geological and palaeobiological data that suggest an early Oligocene to early Miocene model of evolution of the Isthmus of Panama. Arecaceae , biogeography , Caribbean , Central American Seaway , Cuba , Hawaiian Islands , Palmae , phytogeography , South America Introduction The formation of the Isthmus of Panama is considered by physical scientists as one of the most important geological events in Cenozoic history [last 60 million years Mya ; e.
In addition to the climatic and oceanographic effects, the closure of the Isthmus of Panama is also considered to have been a defining event in the biogeography of the Americas e. For plants, a recent meta-analysis has shown older trans-CAS divergence times, implying a higher propensity for dispersal than animals throughout the geological period of Panamanian assembly Cody et al. The combined processes of plate disassembly and redistribution, together with phases of global warming and cooling, are thought to have afforded plants intermittent dispersal opportunities that could have contributed to the direction of angiosperm diversification Morley, In particular, long-distance dispersal has been demonstrated to be the likely cause of many plant distributions, including those in the Neotropics e.
Previous studies based on isotopic, geochemical and fossil faunal data from sedimentary strata across the Isthmus of Panama were inferred to indicate a Pliocene emergence and closure of the Isthmus [c.

Non-pure abjads such as Hebrew and Arabic script and abugidas use diacritics for denoting vowels. Hebrew and Arabic also indicate consonant doubling and change with diacritics; Hebrew and Devanagari use them for foreign sounds. Devanagari and related abugidas also use a diacritical mark called a virama to mark the absence of a vowel. Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics use several types of diacritics, including the diacritics with alphabetic properties known as Medials and Finals.
Although long vowels originally were indicated with a negative line through the Syllabic glyphs, making the glyph appear broken, in the modern forms, a dot above is used to indicate vowel length. In some of the styles, a ring above indicates a long vowel with a [j] off-glide.

Although movable type, as well as paper, first appeared in China, it was in Europe that printing first became mechanized. The earliest mention of a printing press is in a lawsuit in Strasbourg in revealing construction of a press for Johannes Gutenberg and his associates.
Courtesy of the trustees of the British Museum; photograph, J. The invention of the printing press itself obviously owed much to the medieval paper press, in turn modeled after the ancient wine-and-olive press of the Mediterranean area. A long handle was used to turn a heavy wooden screw, exerting downward pressure against the paper, which was laid over the type mounted on a wooden platen.

Dos Passos met Ernest Hemingway two years later. He would lose both friends during the Spanish Civil War. Robles was murdered at the beginning of the war, and that tragedy opened an irreversible rift between the two American writers. These events make up the central drama of Breaking Point: In Dos Passos was at the height of his career, regarded as the premier American leftist writer. Although Dos Passos’s fame never equaled Hemingway’s, the inventor of the succinct sentence was in a moderate career slump, having watched his prestigious cultural standing subside as the quintessential Lost Generation writer of the twenties.
According to Koch, Dos Passos’s success and Hemingway’s concurrent creative foundering rankled the notoriously mercurial writer. Enter the Spanish Civil War. Jose Robles, a Stalinist and Spanish military officer of formidable rank, was arrested and executed by his own red army, a victim of Stalin’s purges that had just begun in Russia and had spread to the Spanish conflict. Robles went to his death a committed Stalinist, but to shroud the reality of the purges, Stalinist officials declared that Robles had been shot as a fascist spy.
Dos Passos was politically astute and a committed leftist though not a declared Stalinist. Hemingway, who was more interested in fame and philandering was rather apolitical, but he positioned himself on the left with the Spanish Republic during the war. Having arrived in Spain first, Hemingway learned of Robles’s murder before Dos Passos and believed every word the propagandists spouted to him about Roble’s fascist connections.
In a deplorable moment, Hemingway saw his chance to publicly humiliate the more politically savvy leftist writer.

Intimate partner violence IPV and its multiple effects are well documented in Western research, but these are not adequately described in Africa. The effects of IPV on adolescent health and well-being are not conclusive. The aim of this review was to systematically appraise prevalence studies conducted on the African continent to establish the prevalence of IPV and the implications of exposure on adolescents in Africa. Two reviewers independently evaluated the methodological quality of the studies reviewed.
Seven eligible epidemiological studies were included in this review. Five of the studies were conducted in South Africa, one in Liberia, and another was a multi-country study that included Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia. The prevalence of IPV in African countries ranged from approximately All studies reported exposure to family violence during childhood. The findings support the global burden of IPV. There is also a need for standardized tools to determine IPV in Africa and a clear definition that can be used in research to allow comparison with future IPV studies.
In addition, the studies point to a need for interventions focusing on adolescents exposed to family violence. Adolescents , at-risk behaviour , intimate partner violence IPV , prevalence , systematic review.

Our reviewed studies cover a broad range of intervention models, and many forms of violence—ie, intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual assault, female genital mutilation, and child marriage. Evidence is highly skewed towards that from studies from high-income countries, with these evaluations mainly focusing on responses to violence.
This evidence suggests that women-centred, advocacy, and home-visitation programmes can reduce a woman’s risk of further victimisation, with less conclusive evidence for the preventive effect of programmes for perpetrators. In low-income and middle-income countries, there is a greater research focus on violence prevention, with promising evidence on the effect of group training for women and men, community mobilisation interventions, and combined livelihood and training interventions for women.
Despite shortcomings in the evidence base, several studies show large effects in programmatic timeframes. Across different forms of violence, effective programmes are commonly participatory, engage multiple stakeholders, support critical discussion about gender relationships and the acceptability of violence, and support greater communication and shared decision making among family members, as well as non-violent behaviour.
Further investment in intervention design and assessment is needed to address evidence gaps. Previous article in issue.
